A birdhouse made for the safest place for a nest - gravel!

What is it?

What is it?

Utilizing a 3D scan of my classmate, this earpiece fits to their specific

ear structure. It not only serves as a piece of jewelry, but also resolves

the shared pains of wired headphones.

Based on the functions of a Killdeer's nest, this birdhouse is made up of two components - A bowl that cradles the bird's eggs, and a lid that camouflages and creates elevation to protect them.

Theoretically located in Knowlton's interior entrance, this bike rack

reveals a colorful core to contrast the building's concrete interior, while

being a learning tool for students to visualize reinforced structures.

What is the goal?

This project aims to understand the concept of "person-centered

design," and leverage new technologies such as 3D scanning to

design a "perfect fit" for a single, real person from my class.

What is the Goal?

This project aims to provide for a specific bird, the Killdeer, and create a dwelling that caters to their needs while embodying the design language of the chosen sustainable brand, Mater.

Knowlton; the school
of architecture

In order to create a perfectly fitting product, I created an accurate 3D scan of an ear using the photogrammetry app RealityScan by scanning my classmate Ros. This created a rough, but usable 3D surface to model after the Cyber Sigilism aesthetic.

I quickly iterated concepts that would follow the curves unique to Ros' ear while designing under cyber sigilism, which is known for its extreme metallic jewelry. After balancing looks and functionality, I could start the modeling process using Fusion 360 and other AutoCAD tools.

Finalizing Design

After choosing a concept that best represented my design intent, I drafted a more detailed sketch to finalize the bike rack's form.

I evaluated my sketched forms by creating to-scale cardboard prototypes.

I decided on the concept with the curved shape, as it would nestle into the gravel easier.

Using chipboard and 1/8" plywood, I painted the "exterior" of the bike rack to resemble Knowlton's iconic concrete, with the colored "core" using colored cardstock.
