A birdhouse made for the safest place for a nest - gravel!

SolidWorks // Procreate // Keyshot

What is it?

What is it?

Located at the intersection of Summit and 8th Street, this temporary

installation calls attention to an ordinarily mindless street corner by

creating a colorful and safer environment for the neighborhood.

Based on the functions of a Killdeer's nest, this birdhouse is made

up of two components - A bowl that cradles the bird's eggs, and a

lid to camouflage and create an elevated platform to protect them.

What is the goal?

Using Weinland Park as our base location, we were tasked to create

an urban installation that spoke to our specific location while

designing for the community by providing playful experience.

What is the Goal?

This project aims to provide for a specific bird, the Killdeer, and create a dwelling that caters to their needs while embodying the design language of the chosen sustainable brand, Mater.

BACKGROUND

BACKGROUND

A KILLDEER'S NEST

While a Killdeer's nesting habits protect their offspring in the wild, it does not protect against unwary humans; this is what ROCKY RESPITE aims to solve.

MATER: THE BRAND

This bird nest also matches Mater's brand language, often featuring soft and rounded forms in their furniture pieces.

We noticed the intersection had a large accumulation of waste as well as three lanes of high speed traffic that refused to stop for pedestriansโ€ฆ how can we design an installation to nudge pedestrians away from the edge of the sidewalk?

Place Analysis

Using Christopher Day's book Consensus Design and his Four Layers of place analysis, Day discusses how the โ€œspiritโ€ of a location may constitute its uniqueness. We noted that there wasn't a "sprit" at this locationโ€ฆ so what if we gave it one?

Sketching and Ideation

Focusing on form and function, I chose a design that achieved multiple goals: It could camouflage the Killdeer eggs while nestled in the ground, follow Mater's design language, and have modular/replaceable parts if they get damaged in the wild.

Prototyping

Prototyping

I evaluated my sketched forms by creating to-scale cardboard prototypes.

I decided on the concept with the curved shape, as it would nestle into the gravel easier.

why the redesign?

why the redesign?

Maybe you noticed these current parts don't match the original sketch's designโ€ฆ

โ€ฆthis is because I mis-measured my CNC file to cut the wooden lid; clearly, something needed to change.
